COMPENSATION FOR BIODIVERSITY LOSS

Compensation is a relatively new tool to handle residual impacts once the mitigation hierarchy has been appropriately implemented. This compensation requires an exhaustive assessment and needs to consider two main concepts: additionality and ecological equivalence.
  • Additionality: This condition is reached when the applied compensation measure produces an effect that would not have occurred without the implementation of the measure (Sarmiento et al., 2015).
  • Ecological Equivalence: This condition is accomplished when the area in which the compensation is applied has similarities with the affected area in terms of biodiversity, environmental conditions, and services (Sarmiento et al., 2015).
